Statewide School Closures Extended

Superintendents Desk

March 17, 2020

The Governor’s Office announced today that schools will remain closed through April 28, 2020.

Baker School District is in the process of developing plans to supplement the education of our students during this closure. The highest priority will be given to current Seniors so that they can meet all graduation requirements. Rest assured, we will be putting plans together to serve all children. Additional information will be forthcoming as we develop viable strategies for students and their families to meet the educational needs of their children. This will undoubtedly need to be a partnership between our staff and the families we serve.

We will be seeking clarification on a number of issues from the Oregon Department of Education. We will keep our parents and community updated as we know more. BSD, along with community partners, will continue to provide breakfast and lunch at Haines, Brooklyn, South Baker and the High School. This program is for all children in our community 18 years old and younger.

The Governor has also charged schools to implement child care for first responders, emergency workers and health care professions. BSD is in communication with management of each of these organizations to determine the level of need. We are striving to meet this need as soon as reasonably possible. We are currently developing plans for staffing/logistics to ensure quality care as well as meeting all previous protocols set forth by the state.

I will continue to update our families, staff and community as further information is disseminated from State Authorities. This is a time when we are being asked to sacrifice. Our children and families will not be able to experience many opportunities that they have worked so hard to achieve. One example is our Girls Basketball Team. They lost the opportunity to compete as returning State Champions in this year’s State Tournament. This truly saddens me, these sacrifices are meant to protect those that we care about and love. Our parents, our grandparents and those that have underlying health issues. I am appreciative of how our community is pulling together to address these challenges.

Virus preventionspanish virus prevention

Baker School District has been monitoring the global coronavirus outbreak since it was first reported late last year.

Our schools and our district have emergency communications plans in place for when we experience heightened health risks. We will activate those plans to notify families, staff, and our community if the coronavirus risk elevates to the point where action is required. We are collaborating with Baker County Public Health Department and are preparing to take a variety of actions to protect student’s and staff’s health and safety.

These include:

  • Sanitizing all classrooms and buses this weekend with an approved, safe product that hospitals and schools utilize as a disinfectant. It is called Vital Oxide and is applied utilizing a mist. Henceforth, we will be applying the disinfectant twice per week.
  • Monday, all classroom teachers throughout the District will review personal hygiene strategies with all students. Our District Registered Nurse, Becky Black, will be creating a video that will be sent out next week reinforcing these hygiene strategies.
  •  We have invested in hand sanitizers for each classroom as well as sanitizers that will be at each entrance of our schools to be utilized by students and the public.

Closing schools would be a last resort, and a step the district would take after consulting with Baker County Public Health and the Oregon Health Authority if there were evidence of a severe threat from this virus in our region.

For now, the Oregon Health Authority recommends that students and their families take the same practical precautions they would take to prevent the spread of any other contagious illness such as the flu.

This includes steps such as:

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with the inside of your elbow or a tissue when you cough or sneeze.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.
