Mr. Geno Bates Bio

My name is Geno Bates, and I am extremely excited to have been selected to be the next Principal at South Baker Intermediate School.  I’ve been an educator for 31 years, both as a teacher and administrator.  I spent 13 years teaching at the Gr. 4-8 level.

I was born and raised in Ontario, Oregon and have a wonderful wife of 25+ years and three awesome children.  My wife Laura is currently teaching elementary P.E. and has been a K-2 teacher and Title I teacher for over 27 years.

Our oldest child Jessica (24) is currently attending flight school with the U.S. Army to become a Chinook Pilot.  Andrew (22) is currently attending Boise State University (Go Broncos!) and will be a senior next school year.  He is also a member of the Idaho National Guard.  Our youngest, John (20), also currently attends Boise State University and plays on their football team.  As you can tell we bleed Blue and Orange in our house -- Go Broncos!!

I have been a building administrator for the past 18 years, providing leadership as a principal in elementary schools, middle schools, K-8 schools, and even one year at high school.  Seven years ago I completed my second Master’s Degree from Northwest Nazarene University, earning my Educational Specialist Degree with an emphasis in School District Superintendency and Human Resources.

For the last three years, I have had the opportunity to attend the AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) summer institute training. By attending these pieces of training, I as well as my staff has gained great insight into differentiating instruction to better meet the needs of our students. Also, I have found the use of technology and technology-enhanced instruction can be a huge asset to instruction. Students today use technology on a daily basis and more easily engage in learning when it is in use. Through technology, instruction and learning can be adjusted and even geared towards a student’s learning level, which in turn allows for successful learning.

I firmly believe that an all-in-one approach doesn’t work with our students. By differentiating instruction, and making it engaging and meaningful, this statistic can drastically change. We all need to focus on this change in order to meet the needs of our students on a daily basis.

As the remainder of the school year goes on, I look forward to having an opportunity to come to Baker to get acquainted with the staff and parents of South Baker Intermediate School.  I am excited to continue the great work that has taken place there and am looking forward to working with the outstanding staff in order to enhance and promote a positive and enriching learning environment.
